CPD – Fenugreek seed extract – carcinoma study

This article investigated the potential synergistic effects of combining fenugreek aqueous extract (FAE) with the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (DOX) against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. The researchers found that fenugreek extract enhanced the cytotoxic effects of doxorubicin in HepG2 liver cancer cells, leading to greater cancer cell death through increased apoptosis, autophagy, necrosis, and cell cycle arrest compared with either treatment alone. The study also identified numerous bioactive compounds within fenugreek, including trigonelline, flavonoids, and steroidal saponins, which may contribute to these effects.

This topic is relevant to my clinical practice as a naturopath because many clients seek information about natural therapies that may support conventional cancer treatment. Research exploring the interaction between botanical medicines and chemotherapy helps inform evidence-based discussions about integrative cancer care. While this study was conducted in vitro and cannot be directly applied to clinical practice, it contributes to the growing body of research investigating how plant-based compounds may enhance treatment effectiveness or potentially reduce the required dose of conventional therapies.
