Health Fund rebates for Nat and WHM – Are we there yet?
The journey to restore natural therapies in private health insurance has been long. And it’s not over yet.
In 2015, the Government reviewed 16 natural therapies. It found insufficient evidence of effectiveness and removed rebates for treatments like Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine. This decision hit our industry hard.
Public and professional concern led to a second review in 2019. The Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer led the process, with support from the Natural Therapies Review Expert Advisory Panel (NTREAP). They reviewed updated evidence, consulted the public, and sought expert advice — all under the NHMRC’s guidance.
Our association and members played a key role. Your submissions, insights, and ongoing support helped highlight the value of our profession.
In April 2025, NTREAP recommended reinstating rebates for Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine. The final report is now with the Federal Health Minister. We’re one step closer to restoring recognition for our work.
We’ll share updates once the Minister makes a decision.
Thank you for standing with us. Your passion and belief in natural therapies made this possible.
